And if you believe you have all your bases covered, founder-turned-investor <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/etxeba\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Victor Echevarria<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> encourages you to think again.<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI wish I\u2019d done a lot more homework on the potential failure modes that my last startup could stumble into,\u201d he said, speaking about his startup <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/company\/remedy-labs-inc\/about\/\">Remedy Labs<\/a>. \u201cI thought I\u2019d done a pretty thorough diligence job with Remedy, but it was an industry I wasn&#8217;t that familiar with, and I found there was a lot I didn\u2019t know.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Victor is no stranger to <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">growing a startup. He was an early team member at <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/taskrabbit.com\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">TaskRabbit,<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> where he ran marketing and business development and launched the company\u2019s B2B offering.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So when Victor and his co-founders began to work on their new startup, they did their homework: they determined various pitfalls and engineered ways around them. They simply missed a big one: \u201cWe were in the business of analyzing healthcare data. But if you&#8217;re going to analyze data, you need the data to analyze. We just assumed there would be APIs and electronic access to health data, which was an incorrect assumption at the time.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As a result, Remedy Labs never reached escape velocity and, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">looking back, Victor now realizes he just hadn\u2019t done the amount of research \u2014\u00a0talking to industry experts about pitfalls, testing out available data streams \u2014\u00a0that he needed to.<\/span><\/p>\n<span class='bctt-click-to-tweet'><span class='bctt-ctt-text'><a href='https:\/\/twitter.com\/intent\/tweet?url=https%3A%2F%2Ffoundersnetwork.com%2F%3Fp%3D19567&#038;text=%E2%80%9CAs%20a%20rule%20of%20thumb%20investing%20your%20life%20is%20a%20far%20bigger%20commitment%20than%20writing%20a%20check.%E2%80%9D%20-%20%40etxeba&#038;via=foundersnetwork&#038;related=foundersnetwork' target='_blank'rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">\u201cAs a rule of thumb investing your life is a far bigger commitment than writing a check.\u201d - @etxeba <\/a><\/span><a href='https:\/\/twitter.com\/intent\/tweet?url=https%3A%2F%2Ffoundersnetwork.com%2F%3Fp%3D19567&#038;text=%E2%80%9CAs%20a%20rule%20of%20thumb%20investing%20your%20life%20is%20a%20far%20bigger%20commitment%20than%20writing%20a%20check.%E2%80%9D%20-%20%40etxeba&#038;via=foundersnetwork&#038;related=foundersnetwork' target='_blank' class='bctt-ctt-btn'rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Share on X<\/a><\/span>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As a rule of thumb investing your life is a far bigger commitment than writing a check,\u201d he explained. \u201cIf you wouldn\u2019t find yourself willing to invest your own money, ask yourself why you\u2019re considering investing a percentage of your lifespan on your idea.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In 2018, he took this lesson and others with him when he signed on as a partner at <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.jsv.com\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Jackson Square Ventures<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, an early stage venture capital firm focused on software businesses that has invested in <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/docusign.net\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">DocuSign<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.upwork.com\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Upwork<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.strava.com\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Strava<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/seismic.com\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Seismic<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/offerup.com\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">OfferUp<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Victor will offer advice and feedback at a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/members.foundersnetwork.com\/function\/2388\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Founders Network<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> pitch practice. He has recently made investments in B2B health IT and consumer fintech companies, including <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/1up.health\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">1upHealth<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/wellapp.com\/?creative=500528633230&amp;keyword&amp;matchtype=b&amp;network=g&amp;device=c&amp;gclid=Cj0KCQiAs5eCBhCBARIsAEhk4r6vTaYtbwPBbF86qjrLUQKEYgSVs9f6ia31y9-m342e_MIcmORa3GQaAtC_EALw_wcB\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">WELL Health<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/trustandwill.com\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Trust &amp; Will<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Show metrics that measure the health of the startup<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Victor explained that, especially at the earliest stages, founders tend to focus too heavily on revenue as a success metric.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cRevenue is an output of your business, not a driver of your business. You have to understand and quantify what value you\u2019re actually offering your customers. What are the metrics that suggest you\u2019ve found product market fit?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2. Treat Fundraising Like Storytelling<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cYou need to be very good at telling stories,\u201d Victor explained. \u201cLead your audience through an emotional journey of why you&#8217;re doing what you\u2019re doing, what problems you&#8217;re solving, and what the world will look like when you\u2019re successful. Founders who just spew facts are far less likely to raise money. If you can\u2019t demonstrate your own conviction, then how will customers feel about your product. And importantly, how will future investors view it? A question we all ask is: <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How good are you at fundraising because this won&#8217;t be the last time you do it?<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In this strategy, a deck should be concise and used to support the story, not lead the presentation.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">3. Don\u2019t Go In Asking For Too Much<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIt\u2019s easier to increase the round than decrease the round,\u201d Victor explained. \u201cIf you go in asking for a big number and you get no takers, you\u2019re forced back to the table to say, \u2018Well, now I&#8217;m raising less.\u2019 It\u2019s not a good look. It\u2019s a signal that you\u2019ve misjudged the market, and you\u2019ll be negotiating from a position of weakness.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Alternatively, when you start your ask small, you\u2019ll be in a better place to create more interest.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIf you go in and say, \u2018I&#8217;m going to a small number\u2019 and you&#8217;ve got tons of people that are interested, then you can say, \u2018Thanks for all of your interest. Get Ahead of the No\u2019s<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cDespite what you see in the press right now about huge rounds getting done at\u00a0 massive valuations in practically no time, most entrepreneurs still have to run a long, structured process to get their round closed on more traditional terms,\u201d Victor said.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The majority of startups are going to face a lot of no\u2019s and Victor\u2019s advice is to not be discouraged by it.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cEvery time you get a \u2018no,\u2019 it&#8217;s an opportunity to learn because you\u2019ll receive feedback. A lot of it won\u2019t be helpful, but after hearing enough of it, you\u2019ll start to see signals rise up from the noise. Those are the points you need to address proactively.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">From here, you\u2019ll know what to do to get ahead of the critiques.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cVCs frequently fall victim to confirmation bias.
